Reading tutoring at home

Flagship program

The at-home reading support program, also known as the “flagship program,” has been at the heart of JAME’s mission since 1991.

Every year, dozens of children with reading difficulties are referred by first- and second-grade teachers at elementary schools in five Montreal boroughs.

Once a referred child is accepted into our program, they may receive visits from a volunteer throughout the school year and even for several years, until their reading skills are solid.

Through these sessions, the child develops a love of reading thanks to an approach focused on the joy of reading and learning through play. Beyond academic skills, the volunteer is there to boost the child’s self-esteem, allowing the child to progress at their own pace and according to their own interests.

Twinning Portraits

“In 2021, JAME celebrated its 30th anniversary. To mark the occasion, we shared 30 stories of mentoring relationships that went beyond reading. It was a chance for some volunteers to reconnect with children…who have now grown up!”

Claude, Asante, and Moïse

“Today is Tuesday, the day we read with Claude—we can’t be late after school!” Denise, the mother of Asante and Moïse, still remembers the excitement that filled them every morning during the three years those weekly visits lasted.

Madeleine and Neilan

It had been a long time since they’d seen each other. On this late autumn afternoon, Madeleine and Neilan are chatting away to catch up, since they haven’t seen each other since the young man left elementary school. Now he’s taller than she is.
